Netwalk Foundations Monday!

It’s the third Monday of the month, and you know what that means…yep, it’s another Netwalk Foundations Monday! Free snippets, segments, and worldbuilding short stories in the Netwalk Sequence universe. For your delight today, here’s “Diaspora.”

Diaspora is one of my early attempts at what later became Netwalk. It’s a partial answer to the question of “what was Diana doing while Melanie was in Japan?” It was written about 1994 and I revised it lightly for this publication.

Links to Kindle, epub and PDF versions here.

And did I mention that all Foundations pieces are FREE?

Out with the old, in with the new….helmet, that is.

Six days ago, I took a hard fall when skiing.  It wasn’t on a black diamond or even a difficult blue slope; the slope’s own name, Kruser, testifies to the reality that it’s a pretty easy run with a few sharp drops that are more fun than anything else.  Nonetheless, I caught an edge, weighted my downhill ski wrong, and flipped to land hard on my back and shoulder.  During the tuck and roll, my head hit hard on the packed powder snow.

That was the helmet on my head during that fall…and that crack, right where you see the harness in the full picture, was the result.

I had a wee bit of whiplash from that fall, but I suspect that without the helmet, things could have been much worse.

And, per all helmet advisories, that helmet has served its time and is now in the trash.  It’s been replaced.

And am I a helmet advocate?  Oh hell yes.  The only time you’ll find me on horseback without a helmet is during a Western show.  On skis or on a bicycle…never.  Helmet.  Always.

Didn’t need this to make me a believer, though.

Arrgh.

By all rights the settings should be working to crosspost to Dreamwidth without disabling comments there or in LJ.

BUT IT’S NOT.

Grr.  It’s either JournalPress or Dreamwidth, and DW FAQs ain’t helping.

DW, not so fond of you!

Since crossposting to Dreamwidth is borking my comments…let’s see if I’ve fixed it.

Mrs RW, Chipmunk Wrangler….NOT!

Sometimes Monday mornings end up being a bit more…um…surprising than you’d think.  During 8th grade Social Studies, I got a few questions about Black Plague.  Scratched my head, wondering what got the kids off on that tangent.

And then, whilst cleaning up the room before lunch…the janitors came in and started poking around a couple of mystery vents.  Then I got told there was a squirrel in the vent.

Oh.  OH.  I have to wonder if the kids knew about the squirrel since they were, ahem, a bit squirrely in behavior….

Explained a bit.  In any case, once the vent covers came off, a little striped chipmunk was very, very happy to hop out of the vent and into the cage set up outside the vent.  I guess she’s female.  The science teacher whisked her off to his room for food and water, and I suppose eventual release once she’s rehydrated and all.

I’m sure glad I didn’t know about her being there until they got her out!  Goes right along with finding the dust-coated frog that crawled out from under a locker three years ago, and the big forked-horn buck that ambled by the north side of the building last week…to video and pictures from staff.

Happiness #22

I woke up yesterday with nasty arthritis pain, especially in my back (byproduct of moving all that stuff the day before).  But wearing my Spiffy New Corset over a chemise and under a regular shirt really, really helped!  Much of a coolness.
